With an eye to the powerful exactitude of these melodies, Veveritse makes room for play. Slippery, squirrelly even, they may start off running almost too fast, only to drop the bottom out; what begins sonorous and jagged straightens up, and carries you into the night….dancing, sighing. With two trumpets, a saxophone, four mid-horns, a tuba and two drummers, they are ten deep, creating not a wall of sound, but a loud tapestry. Members of the band also play in other great NYC bands like Slavic Soul Party, Zlatne Uste, Zion80, Romashka, Hungry March Band, Ansambl Mastika, Sofie Salonika and Stagger Back Brass Band.

04/27/19 JFREJ MimounaBay Ridge, Brooklyn, NYWiddi HallUS
Time: 7:00pm. Age restrictions: All Ages/Licensed. Address: 572 56th St. Mimouna is a holiday with roots in Moroccan and other North African Jewish communities. It begins the night Passover ends, marking the return of chametz (leavened products) back into our homes. Since most Jews in North African countries lived among Muslim people, they would often sell their chametz to their Muslim neighbors before Passover began, and Mimouna marked the resale of that flour, the return of non-Jewish neighbors back into our homes, and a night filled with singing Arabic songs, dancing with plates, quickly making moflettas (pancakes), gathering the family together, and eating sweet and doughy treats with everyone on the block.Mimouna is one of the most beautifully ordinary rituals of Jewish and Muslim solidarity in Moroccan and North African Jewish history. That’s why we are so excited to bring this celebration to our multi-racial, cross-class, inter-faith communities in our rooted home in New York City, as we narrate the bold vision we have for a shared future of Jewish people alongside our beloved neighbors in the diaspora. Join us in celebrating 5 years of revolutionary organizing among Mizrahi and Sephardi Jews at JFREJ, alongside our neighbors, and in finding joy and nourishment for the long fight ahead! There will be sweet desserts, live music, dancing, storytelling, interpretation, and childcare. *There will also be nuts at this event!*Make sure to RSVP for Mimouna here, spread the word on Facebook, and donate at this link to help us make this incredible event happen!

Talking Band presents world premiere of Fusiform Gyrus – A Septet for Two Scientists and Five HornsPreviews begin February 7, Opens February 13, Runs through February 25Written and composed by OBIE Award winner Ellen Maddow directed by Ellie Heyman at HERE Talking Band will present the world premiere of Fusiform Gyrus – A Septet for Two Scientists and Five Horns, written and composed by OBIE Award winner Ellen Maddow, and directed by Ellie Heyman, running from February 7 – 25, 2018 in a limited engagement at HERE, located at 145 6th Avenue (Enter on Dominick, 1 block south of Spring) in New York City. In Talking Band’s new music-theater work, big ideas bump up against big sound. Five brassy horns and two eccentric scientists leapfrog from epiphany to epiphany. Fusiform Gyrus – A Septet for Two Scientists and Five Horns celebrates the resilience of friendship, the power of music to make us feel like anything can happen, and the rigorous tradition of scientific discovery in a world where scientific truth is often challenged. The cast includes OBIE Award winners Tom Nelis and Paul Zimet, and a motley quintet of horn players, including Chris DiMeglio (trumpet), Lathan Hardy (alto sax), Sam Kulik (tuba), Jessica Lurie (alto & baritone sax) and Peter Zummo (trombone). Also, appearing on video: Will Badgett, Sumaya Bouhbal, Kim Gambino. The production team includes Anna Kiraly (Set & Video Design), Mary Ellen Stebbins (Lighting Design), Kiki Smith (Costume Design) and Kristin Kelly (Production Stage Manager). Talking Band’s original interdisciplinary performance work has been a cornerstone of New York City’s avant-garde theater community for 44 years. Founded in 1974 by Ellen Maddow, Tina Shepard and Paul Zimet, the company has produced over fifty new works illuminating the extraordinary dimensions of ordinary life, combining richly textured music-theater with striking visual imagery. Collectively, the company and founders have earned 15 OBIE Awards and numerous other honors.  For more info visit TalkingBand.org and like them on Facebook at Talking Band. Performances are Tuesdays – Saturdays at 7pm and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $25 from Feb 7-11 and $30 from Feb 14-25. Student tickets are $20. Special opening night Benefit Performance and Post-Show Party on Feb 13. Tickets $75.

JESSICA LURIE ENSEMBLE featuring Wayne Horvitz piano, Jessica Lurie sax & flute, Rene hart bass, Greg Campbell drums and special guests! Seattle and Brooklyn-based Jessica Lurie is one of the elite artists to come out of the Seattle 1990’s explosion of jazz and improvisational music.  An award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser, Lurie performs on saxophones, flute, electronics and voice.  Growing up under the influence of an inquisitive musical household and Seattle’s divergent yet cross-over rich music community, she calls on a wide range of musical influences from around the globe as a composer and performer.  Known for “melding lyrical pop, stinging rock, rhythmic Eastern European folk music and improvisation-heavy jazz with a dose of free-wheeling avant-groove-meets-grind” (Dan Oulette), her performances are dynamic, full of high energy interaction between band members. She will be performing a diverse set as usual, featuring works from her forthcoming CD “Long Haul”, to be released this December on Chant Records out of NYC.Opening Set: SLINGSHOT SONGS with Beth Fleenor clarinets and vocals, Heather Bentley viola, Jessica Lurie sax & flute, Sam Boshniak trumpet, Wayne Horvitz piano & rhodes, Rene Hart bass, Greg Campbell drums. SLINGSHOT SONGS is an evolving collaborative improvising ensemble of mostly Seattle -based or originated musicians, coming together on the east and west coasts to create new soundscapes and storytelling. Led by Jessica Lurie on saxophone, Beth Fleenor on clarinet, they gather together a group of dynamic friends, improvisers, composers and leaders of their own projects as internationally to perform on both coasts. Together they embrace high energy interaction and  a genre-busting sound, ranging from micro-Big Band to Gospel, Whimsical Jazz to Nocturnal Funk to Free. More information

JL & OU in “THE QUOURTET”(U.S.A./ITALIA) Jessica Lurie, sassofonista staunitense attiva sulla scena jazz e dell’avanguardia dai primi anni novanta (The Tiptones, JL Ensemble), incontra OU. Chant/Strenght/Spirit/Collective Pulsation/JoynessJessica Lurie – sax alto, flauta, voce, FX Ersilia Prosperi – tromba, flicorno, conchiglia Claudio Mosconi – basso elettrico Cristiano De Fabritiis – batteria More information
