- Notes: JESSICA LURIE ENSEMBLE featuring Wayne Horvitz piano, Jessica Lurie sax & flute, Rene hart bass, Greg Campbell drums and special guests! Seattle and Brooklyn-based Jessica Lurie is one of the elite artists to come out of the Seattle 1990’s explosion of jazz and improvisational music. An award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser, Lurie performs on saxophones, flute, electronics and voice. Growing up under the influence of an inquisitive musical household and Seattle’s divergent yet cross-over rich music community, she calls on a wide range of musical influences from around the globe as a composer and performer. Known for “melding lyrical pop, stinging rock, rhythmic Eastern European folk music and improvisation-heavy jazz with a dose of free-wheeling avant-groove-meets-grind” (Dan Oulette), her performances are dynamic, full of high energy interaction between band members. She will be performing a diverse set as usual, featuring works from her forthcoming CD “Long Haul”, to be released this December on Chant Records out of NYC. Opening Set: SLINGSHOT SONGS with Beth Fleenor clarinets and vocals, Heather Bentley viola, Jessica Lurie sax & flute, Sam Boshniak trumpet, Wayne Horvitz piano & rhodes, Rene Hart bass, Greg Campbell drums. SLINGSHOT SONGS is an evolving collaborative improvising ensemble of mostly Seattle -based or originated musicians, coming together on the east and west coasts to create new soundscapes and storytelling. Led by Jessica Lurie on saxophone, Beth Fleenor on clarinet, they gather together a group of dynamic friends, improvisers, composers and leaders of their own projects as internationally to perform on both coasts. Together they embrace high energy interaction and a genre-busting sound, ranging from micro-Big Band to Gospel, Whimsical Jazz to Nocturnal Funk to Free.
